Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh : A massive landslide in Batseri on Sangla-Chitkul road in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday killed nine persons and injured at least three others. Huge boulders rolled down the mountain following the landslide and destroyed an iron Bailey bridge and many vehicles parked along the road within a few seconds. Along with the Batseri bridge, several vehicles beside it also got crushed into pieces. The horrifying incident was reported around 2:15 pm Sunday and a vehicle carrying 11 tourists was hit by the landslide. A local was also injured after being hit by the boulders. Indo-Tibetan Border Police teams have been pressed to rescue work.
Reports said the travellers, some from Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Chattisgarh, was hit by boulders near Gunsa, killing nine tourists, were on their way to Chitkul, which is a popular tourist spot in Himachal Pradesh. A couple of videos of this heart-wrenching incident went viral on social media. In the video, some people can be heard whistling and shouting to warn others. Superintendent of police, Kinnaur district, Saju Ram Rana said, “Nine people died, and three were injured after boulders rolled downhill due to a landslide in Kinnaur district. Batseri bridge collapsed in the incident. A rescue team is present at the spot,”
Reports said the incident took place at around 2.15 pm and as evident from the footage, locals who were recording the rock-slides raised an alarm after the boulders started coming down from the top of the mountain. First, a massive splash in the Baspa river and then the bridge on the river caved in.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in an accident in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The Prime Minister has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh to be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives and Rs. 50,000 to those injured.
In a series of PMO tweet, the Prime Minister said; “The accident caused by landslide in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh is extremely sad. My heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this. Full arrangements are being made for the treatment of those injured in the accident. I wish them a speedy recovery. The deceased were identified as:
1. Pratiksha Sunil Patil (27) from Sadhbhawna Nagar, Nagpur, Maharashtra
2. Deepa Sharma (34) from Jaipur
3. Amoghi Bapat (27) from Korba Darri in Chhatisgarh
4. Umrab Singh (42) of Tagore Garden West Delhi
5. Kumar Ulhas vedpathak (37)
6. Anurag Biyani (31) from Sikar in Rajasthan, his mother Maya Devi Biyani (55) and his sister Richa Biyani (25)
7. Satish Katakbar (34) from Chhatisgarh.
Those injured have been identified as : Shiril Obroy (39) from West Delhi, Naveen Bhardwaj (37) from Kaharar in Mohali and Ranjeet Singh (45) from Batseri in Sangla.
Responding to the incident, CM Jairam Thakur expressed his grief and wrote on Twitter, ‘The accident in Kinnaur’s Batseri due to the landslide is heart-wrenching. It is very sad that a vehicle carrying tourists came under its grip, in which 9 died and 2 injured and 1 other passerby got injured. May God grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved family.’
He also informed that relief work has already started in the area, ‘I spoke to Kinnaur district administration and inquired about the accident and gave them proper guidelines. The administration has started relief work at the spot and immediate relief is being provided to the affected. May the injured persons get speedy recovery, I pray to God,’ he wrote on Twitter.
